Why Will FUP Be Implemented?

The Mailtarget API & SMTP continue to grow and are used by a wide range of users, from small startups to large enterprises. To maintain system stability, prevent abuse, and ensure fair service for all users, we will implement FUP as part of our operational policies.

Fair Usage Policy (FUP) is a fair usage policy implemented to ensure that every user of Mailtarget services, particularly email delivery services via API & SMTP, uses system resources fairly and does not harm other users.

FUP aims to ensure:

  • Services are used fairly according to subscription capacity

  • There is no excessive or abnormal usage

  • Service performance remains optimal for all users

What Will Be Regulated in the FUP?

Once the FUP is officially implemented, Mailtarget will implement usage limits for email sending services via API and SMTP to comply with fair use principles. One important component of this FUP is:

Daily FUP – Daily Usage Limit

What is it?

The Daily FUP is a limit on email sending within a 24-hour period, adjusted according to the user's subscription plan type. Its primary purpose is not to limit your growth, but to manage system capacity efficiently and stably so that all users continue to receive optimal service performance.

Why is a Daily FUP Necessary?

  • Maintaining System Stability: With a daily limit, the system can evenly distribute the email sending load, preventing extreme traffic spikes that could potentially slow down or disrupt other users' deliveries.

  • Protecting IP and Domain Reputation: Sending a very large volume of emails in a short period of time can trigger the anti-spam systems of email providers (such as Gmail, Yahoo, etc.). With a daily limit, sending can be more natural and maintain a good reputation.

  • Common Industry Practice: Major email providers also implement daily limits (and gradually increase user capacity) to maintain quality and prevent abuse.

  • Simplifying Monitoring & Planning: With a daily limit, users can more easily monitor and plan their deliveries based on stable and measurable needs.

How Does It Work?

  • You can view daily usage status directly on the Mailtarget dashboard.

  • The system will send an automatic warning notification when usage approaches the daily limit (e.g., 80%).

  • If the daily limit is reached, sending will be paused and automatically resumed the next day when the daily quota is reset.

  • You can still view logs, delivery status, and manage scheduled deliveries without data loss.

Are These Limits Flexible?

Yes, Mailtarget will adjust these limits proportionally to your plan. Enterprise plan users can also discuss with our support team to determine specific needs based on your business volume.

What Should You Do Now?

  • Understand Your Sending Patterns: Start monitoring your daily and monthly email send volumes, especially if you regularly use APIs or SMTP services extensively.

  • Use services according to your reasonable needs: Avoid excessive sending at once, sending to invalid addresses, or other activities that could disrupt system performance.

  • Understand the concept of daily FUP early on: When the FUP policy is implemented, the daily sending limit will adjust to your subscription plan. Understanding this early will help you plan your email sending more efficiently, distribute it more evenly, and avoid being disrupted by automatic throttling.

  • Evaluate Your Subscription Plan: If your sending needs are becoming excessive or inconsistent, consider discussing it with our support team to find the most suitable solution, including a possible package upgrade.

Example FUP Scenario (Illustrative)

Here's a usage illustration to help you understand how the Fair Usage Policy will work when implemented, assuming the daily quota (FUP) is determined based on the subscription package:

Free Package User

  • Monthly Quota: 3,000 emails (one-time)

  • Daily FUP: 100 emails

Scenario:

  • You set up a notification email to be sent to 200 recipients today.

  • After 100 emails are sent, the system automatically stops sending, and the remaining 100 are rescheduled.

  • Sending will resume the next day with the new FUP limit (100 emails).

  • You will still be able to view a log of successful and pending deliveries.

What to Note:

  • You need to set up a small batch of email deliveries per day.

  • Ideal for testing or small-scale deliveries, not large, one-day campaigns.

10,000 Emails/Month Package Users

  • Daily FUP: 1,000 emails/day

Scenario A: Consistent Daily Sending

  • You send ~900 emails per day for transaction notifications.

  • The system is running normally, and you receive a notification when it approaches 1,000.

  • There are no issues, the campaign is stable and efficient.

Scenario B: Daily Sending with Spikes

  • You want to send transaction emails to 5,000 contacts in one day.

  • The system will only send 1,000 emails that day.

  • The remaining 4,000 emails:

    • The system will automatically schedule them for the next day (if quota is available).

    • Or you can manually schedule email sends.

What to Note:

  • Plan large-scale email sends on a schedule.

  • If daily demand exceeds the quota, consider segmenting or upgrading your plan.

  • Don't panic if the send isn't completed immediately; the system will still record and process the next send if the daily quota is available.

What Will Happen When the FUP Goes Live?

We understand that changes like this can raise questions or concerns. Here's a detailed explanation to ensure you understand that this policy is designed to support, not hinder:

1. Notification & Communication Before Release

  • Mailtarget will officially announce when the FUP goes into effect.

  • Information will be sent via email and displayed on your dashboard.

2. Usage Monitoring Dashboard

  • You will be able to view your daily and monthly limits in real-time.

  • A visual indicator will show your remaining FUP and an estimated reset time.

3. Automatic Alerts When Approaching the Limit

  • A notification will appear when your usage reaches ~80% of your daily quota.

  • You have time to adjust your delivery or delay email delivery if necessary.

4. Actions When Reaching the Daily Limit

  • If you reach your daily limit, email delivery will not fail. Instead, it will:

    • Be temporarily blocked and can be rescheduled, or

    • Be automatically delayed to be sent the next day.

  • The system will not immediately disable your account or take drastic action.

5. Support When You Need Help

  • If you encounter any issues due to daily limits, the Mailtarget support team is ready to assist.

  • You can request exceptions, clarifications, or request capacity upgrades if urgent.

6. Flexibility for Larger Plans

  • Enterprise plan users and users with special needs can discuss directly with the Mailtarget support team for customized limits (custom FUP limits).
